A crankshaft with counterweights prevents vibrations and oil foaming at high engine speeds. It is therefore an excellent investment for anyone who regularly runs their engine above 4500 to 5000 rpm. The engine runs smoother, can produce more power and will have a longer service life than with an original crankshaft.
This 74 mm stroker crankshaft is equipped with 8 dowel pin holes (dowel pins are already installed) to secure the flywheel firmly to the crankshaft. The holes are asymmetrically drilled so the flywheel can only be mounted onto the crankshaft in one position. This is important for proper balancing.
If you are not fitting a new lightweight flywheel that is already supplied with 8 holes, the existing flywheel must be drilled with 4 additional holes using tool 01103. Mounting the flywheel on only 4 dowel pins is possible, but not recommended for higher-performance engines.
The crankshaft features large cross-drilled oil passages for improved oil flow, a micro-polished bearing surface and is dynamically balanced (additional balancing together with the flywheel and crank pulley is recommended). In addition, this crankshaft is manufactured from a single piece of forged chromoly steel. Chromoly is one of the strongest metals available and is therefore extremely suitable for crankshafts, especially when high power output is required.
This 74 mm crankshaft is intended for connecting rods with a VW journal size, in other words the original VW dimensions. When using an original engine case, the case must be modified. If you also purchase a “Super Stock” engine case (only available for Type 1 and Type 3 engines), this modification is not necessary because these cases are already prepared for a stroker crankshaft.
Important: Thoroughly clean the oil passages before installing the crankshaft. Grinding residue or metal particles may still be present in the oil passages from the factory. Remove the Allen screws, carefully clean the oil passages and reinstall the screws using a suitable thread-locking compound. Always make sure the screws are properly secured before installing the crankshaft.
