Model year identification

Over the years, our classic Volkswagen has undergone numerous modifications, most of which were carried out on fixed dates. From 1960 onwards, the model year precedes the calendar year: a car built in October 1964 is therefore a 1965 model (the model change took place on August 1, 1964). The vehicle registration documents indicate the year of first registration, which is not the exact year of manufacture. A car purchased in January 1973 may have spent eight months in the showroom, so it was built around May 1972.
Since 1980, the chassis number (VIN) has consisted of 17 characters. Volkswagen introduced this system on the Beetle on November 1, 1979, and on the Bus on August 1, 1980. If a chassis number is required to determine which product is suitable, we provide an abbreviated version of the chassis number.
Please note: our chassis number documentation assumes that your car still has all its original technical specifications. These documents are an additional service from which no rights can be derived.
Make sure you have the VIN number (chassis number) and the engine serial number at hand before ordering. This will help you choose the right parts for your car. Consult the documents below that we provide to find the year of manufacture of your VW using the chassis number (VIN number). This document also lists the engine types, provided you know the serial number of your engine.
