A counterweighted crankshaft reduces vibrations, oil foaming and crankshaft flex at high engine speeds. It is therefore a very good investment for engines that regularly run above approximately 4500 to 5000 rpm. The engine runs smoother and the crankshaft is subjected to less stress at high rpm, which benefits reliability and service life.
The crankshafts listed here for Type 1, Type 3 and CT/CZ engines are equipped with 8 dowel pin holes with the dowel pins installed, ensuring that the flywheel is securely mounted to the crankshaft. One of the holes is deliberately offset slightly so that the flywheel can only be fitted to the crankshaft in one position. This is important when the crankshaft is balanced together with the flywheel.
If you are not fitting a new flywheel that is already provided with 8 holes, the existing flywheel must be drilled with 4 additional holes using the dowel pin drilling jig listed under the Options tab. Mounting the flywheel with only 4 dowel pins is possible, but is not recommended for engines with higher power output or higher engine speeds.
The crankshafts are equipped with cross-drilled oil passages for good oil flow and micro-polished bearing journals. They are dynamically balanced at the factory. For the best result, we recommend balancing the complete rotating assembly of crankshaft, flywheel, pressure plate and crankshaft pulley together.
Depending on the version, the crankshafts are forged from a single piece of 4140 or 4340 chromoly steel. Both materials are very strong and highly resistant to wear and fatigue, with 4340 mainly being used for crankshafts intended for even higher loads.
The version listed here is intended for connecting rods with VW journals, in other words the original VW dimensions. With longer-stroke crankshafts, the crankcase must be modified to provide sufficient clearance. When using a suitably prepared Super Stock crankcase, considerably less machining is normally required.

Note: Always clean the oil passages thoroughly before installation. Grinding residue or other production debris may still be present after manufacturing.
