Product description
It is quite common for this oil pressure switch to be the cause of a minor oil leak. A correctly functioning switch is, however, primarily important for monitoring the oil pressure. When the oil pressure becomes too low, the switch causes the warning light on the dashboard to illuminate.
Therefore, regularly check the operation of the system. With the ignition switched on and the engine stopped, the oil pressure warning light should be illuminated. Once the engine is running and sufficient oil pressure has built up, the warning light should go out. If it remains illuminated while the engine is running, switch off the engine immediately and check the cause.
Volkswagen specifies a nominal switching pressure of 0.30 bar for this oil pressure switch. According to the Volkswagen specification, the warning light may switch off at a rising oil pressure between 0.15 and 0.45 bar.
For the A-quality version listed here, the manufacturer also specifies a range of 0.15 to 0.45 bar. In our practical test, three switches operated at 0.35, 0.30 and 0.30 bar. The measured values were therefore very close to the nominal value of 0.30 bar.
Under the Alternatives tab you will also find the more economical B-quality version. The manufacturer specifies 0.30 bar for this version. We tested a total of six switches of this quality. They operated at 0.55, 0.15, 0.20, 0.27, 0.20 and 0.25 bar. The variation between the individual switches is therefore greater than with the A-quality version.
Importantly, in our test none of the six B-quality switches operated below Volkswagen’s specified lower limit of 0.15 bar. The B-quality version therefore also provides the required oil pressure monitoring; the main difference compared with the A-quality version is the greater variation in switching pressure.
Note: The original Volkswagen oil pressure switch has a tapered thread which tightens as it is screwed in and therefore provides the seal. On reproduction switches, the range of this taper may differ. Check this during installation. If the switch starts to tighten noticeably about halfway in, the tapered thread can provide the seal. If the switch can be screwed in almost completely without the thread tightening, use a small amount of suitable, oil-resistant thread sealant.
Do not use thread-locking compound.
