This measuring tool has been specially developed for our air-cooled Volkswagen engines and can also be used on Waterboxer engines. It allows the crankshaft end float to be measured easily and accurately. This clearance, the axial movement of the crankshaft relative to the engine case, is one of the most critical tolerances during engine assembly or overhaul.
With this tool, you can quickly check whether the clearance falls within the values specified by Volkswagen. Correct adjustment is essential for the service life and reliability of the engine. Too little clearance can lead to seizure and bearing damage, while too much clearance causes excessive wear and oil leakage.
The tool is mounted onto the engine case. Pull the flywheel outward until maximum clearance is reached, then turn the adjustment screw against the flywheel and push the flywheel back. The clearance can then be measured precisely using feeler gauges (not included). In this way, the axial movement of the crankshaft is accurately recorded and the clearance can easily be corrected using shims.
