Product description
Yellow headlights were introduced in France well before the Second World War, so that local troops could distinguish between vehicles belonging to their own population and those of the enemy. The fact that these yellow beams could also form clearly visible targets from a distance was apparently overlooked.
Despite this drawback, the French continued to adhere to this distinctive traffic regulation after the war. Officially, because yellow light was considered less dazzling for oncoming traffic than white light, but at the same time it is less intense and therefore provides less illumination under normal nighttime conditions.
It is therefore not surprising that, in an increasingly open Europe, more and more complaints arose from foreign drivers traveling in France at night who found the lighting inadequate and unsafe. As a result, the European Commission decided in 1994, as part of market harmonization, to allow only clear (white) headlights.
Volkswagens intended for the French market were also equipped with yellow headlights. These were permitted throughout Europe until 1994. Due to their distinctive appearance and softer light pattern, yellow headlights have once again become popular among Volkswagen enthusiasts, even though the reduced light output is accepted.
