Until 1965, the headlight wiring was clamped into a bakelite plug that was pressed onto the headlight socket.
This system proved to be sensitive to moisture and Volkswagen later replaced it with a plastic connector. With this latest version, it often happens that the entire plug housing is cut off from the wiring harness and reassembled afterwards, due to lack of knowledge. Of course, it shouldn't be like that, that's asking for trouble.
By using a small screwdriver to press on the barb of the plug, you can easily remove the plug from the housing. Then bend the hook back into shape and push it back into the case until it snaps into place.
When the whole thing is cut off, you will need to mount new plugs, you will need a special crimping tool that can handle bent cable lugs. Not everyone has such pliers in their toolbox, and buying them specially is quite expensive, especially since bent connectors are only found on headlights.
But for every problem there is a solution with these connectors which have 29 cm of wiring. Enough length to run them inside, after which you connect them to the existing wiring with a flat pin connector (shown in the options tab).
For the years up to 1965 it's much easier, if the bakelite connectors are torn or the contacts are corroded you can easily replace them, these replacements are an identical reproduction of the original.
