After extensive development, CAD modelling, 3D scanning and comprehensive real-world testing, EMPI has developed a patented fan shroud that cools more effectively, directs airflow more efficiently and fits better than the standard 30 HP model fan shrouds in our range, listed under the "Alternatives" tab.
These Super Fan Shrouds deliver a greater volume of air, resulting in increased cooling capacity. The internal vane structure has been optimised using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and extensively tested on an engine dynamometer. By 3D scanning multiple engine cases and cooling tins, a perfect fit has been achieved.
The Super Fan Shroud has been completely redesigned to provide a cleaner, original-style appearance while improving engine performance and durability compared to conventional fan shrouds. The redesigned air intake, inspired by the original Porsche 356 design, increases incoming airflow for even more efficient cooling. Air distribution across the engine has also been significantly improved. Whereas the original fan shroud often favours cylinders 1 and 2, the Super Fan Shroud distributes airflow evenly across both sides of the engine, resulting in more consistent operating temperatures and improved engine stability.
The cooling vane tips have also been extended to simulate the effect of the original thermostat flaps in the fully open position. Even when the thermostat is missing or no longer functional, airflow remains optimal. The fit has been improved for both original, Super Stock and Bubble-top engine cases, making installation easier while providing a better seal against the engine tinware. In addition, the generator mounting holes are now horizontally aligned and unnecessary openings have been eliminated, creating a cleaner appearance and more efficient internal airflow.
Extensive testing has shown that the EMPI Super Fan Shroud delivers seven percent more total airflow than comparable standard 30 HP model fan shrouds and thirty-seven percent greater cooling capacity than an original VW fan shroud fitted with a 37 mm fan. Combined with an external oil cooler and a 37 mm fan, this Super Fan Shroud provides up to forty-two percent greater overall engine cooling than a standard oil cooler fitted in an original fan shroud.
