In air-cooled Volkswagen engines, oil pressure is essential. Oil not only provides lubrication, it also helps regulate engine temperature. The oil pump generates pressure, but this must remain within safe limits. Oil pressure springs take care of this.
Until the 1969 model year, VW used a single spring; from 1970 onwards, two springs with plungers were used. When the engine is cold, the springs maintain high pressure for rapid lubrication. When the engine is hot or at high revs, the plungers open a bypass to prevent overpressure. from 1970 onwards, the additional spring/piston also determines when oil is fed to the cooler.
Oil pressure springs therefore act as pressure-regulating valves and wear out over time. Check them carefully and compare them with VW's original specifications:
Flywheel side: 1.7 - 2.0 kg at 26 mm
Pulley side up to 7/1969: 2.5 - 4.2 kg at 43.2 mm
Pulley side from 8/1969: 6.8 - 8.8 kg at 39 mm
If they fall outside these values, which will be the case for most motors, they must be replaced.
Note: many available springs (both original VW springs from old NOS stocks and reproductions) fall outside these tolerances. The spring offered here meets VW specifications; the measured value is given below the specifications.
