Product description
Installing a Type 4 engine in a car fitted with a Type 1 engine as standard involves several modifications. One of these involves changing the flywheel. This requires at least a 200 mm clutch disc, which was not used on the first VW 411 models until 1969. It's almost impossible to find one, and if you do, you'll have to face the problem that these flywheels are weaker ex-factory than those on a Type 1.
The 200 mm conversion flywheel is a reproduction of the VW 411 flywheel and is made of forged chrome-molybdenum, which is much stronger than the original, i.e. the right combination for hooking up a Type 4 engine to a Type 1 gearbox. In addition to the 200 mm version, this conversion flywheel is also available for a 215 mm clutch plate. Not a bad choice when you consider that the latest 1600 cc Type 1 engines and 1800 cc Type 4 engines from a T2 Combi were equipped with them at the factory. What's more, a 215 mm flywheel is the maximum diameter that can be fitted to a gearbox previously equipped with a Type 1 or Type 3 engine.
Like the 200 mm version, this flywheel is also made from forged chrome-molybdenum.
Note: Don't forget to order an upper drive shaft bearing, listed in the "options" tab. This is mounted in the flywheel and replaces the function in the crankshaft (the plug shaft no longer reaches the crankshaft).
