Volkswagen has been known for its solidity for decades, and the brand has lived up to this reputation over the years. While cars from other brands have long since disappeared from the press, Volkswagens are still plentiful on the streets.
Unfortunately, most imitation sheet metal is much weaker - or thinner - than the sheet metal Volkswagen used back in the day. For years, the emphasis was on price, so many sheet metal factories capitalized on this situation and VW's solid quality was no longer available.
Fortunately, those days are now gone and better alternatives are available, such as the A-quality floorpans mentioned here. These have a thickness of 1.2 mm and a careful pressing that more than rivals the original.
All A-quality floorpans are supplied as individual components which still have to be welded to the floor.
If you're looking for a less expensive option, and don't mind the fact that the sheet material is considerably thinner (0.75 mm) and the pressing isn't perfect everywhere, you can also opt for B-quality floorpans. These are available for a limited number of model years (see "Alternatives" tab).
