Product description
By turning the ball joint of the tie rod in or out, the car is aligned. Then the ball joint is secured with a double nut or clamp.
If your Volkswagen has clamps (which are tightened around the tie rod and secure the ball joint), no standard nuts or bolts are used. They are metric threaded, but with a 1.0 pitch (or metric fine thread). The bolts have a specific length of 32 mm.
On many Volkswagens these bolts and nuts have already been replaced by a standard M8 bolt and nut. Even most reproduction ball joints do not use these special bolts and nuts.
Volkswagen did not apply the bolt length and thread pitch in this way for nothing, the fine metric thread can withstand higher forces and is less susceptible to dirt. By matching the bolt length to the substrate, dirt on the bolt thread is avoided, which also helps to keep the bolts in good condition.
Even with a lot of dirt, unscrewing an original fine metric threaded nut will not be a problem, whereas a 1.25 metric threaded bolt will break or turn because of all the dirt.
Always replace bolts and nuts to factory specifications. Therefore, use these special steering knuckle mounting bolts that are made specifically for this purpose.
