When fitting a new camshaft, it is advisable to replace the lifters as well, as they wear against each other. If the old lifters are worn (flat or even hollow), they must be replaced. With the exception of diesel engines, new lifters are always machined in a spherical shape.

We know about mechanical lifters , where the valve play has to be adjusted manually, and hydraulic lifters , which have an automatic adjustment mechanism. When starting an old engine with these hydraulic lifters , it can happen that it starts with a strong knocking noise. This is due to one or more of the lifters not working properly. Disassembly and cleaning can sometimes help, but in most cases, replacement is the only option.

Lifters should never be replaced individually, but always all eight at once. This is understandable, as they are the same age and therefore wear out equally fast.

Do not use engine oil during assembly, but only assembly paste (see "Options" tab). This paste ensures a good lubrication during the first minutes, to avoid immediate wear. The assembly paste will be washed with engine oil and the engine oil will then provide lubrication.

During the first start, the surfaces should wear towards each other, so the engine should not drop below 1500 rpm. Make sure that for the first 10 to 15 minutes the engine is running at 2000 rpm. Avoid unnecessary idling for the first 500 km and set the engine speed a little higher (around 1000 rpm).

Lifters for Type 1 25 and 30 hp engines are different from all others, they are a unit with pushrods, but the way of assembling and turning them is the same.

The lifters on the diesel engines are completely different than the lifters on the boxer engines, they are driven directly from the camshaft and are adjusted by adjustment plates.

Note: If a non-standard camshaft is fitted (faster camshaft), it is important to fit the lifters that the manufacturer recommends using. The material of which the camshaft and lifters are made is decisive. If they are too hard or too soft, the parts will clash and irreparable damage will be caused to the camshaft and lifters. The warranty is therefore only granted if the camshaft and lifters are mentioned on one invoice.

For Type 1 and Type 3 engines (except 25 and 30 hp engines) special lifters clamps are available to hold the lifters in place during assembly. If you've never done it before, you'll try it without these clamps, but trust me, it's a small investment for an incredible convenience. Try holding 4 lifters at the same time.
