Product description
An ignition coil gradually loses some of its power over the years. Replacement is therefore not only worthwhile when the ignition coil is defective; replacing an old but still functioning ignition coil will also provide a stronger spark at the spark plugs.
Please note: There is a difference between ignition coils for a conventional ignition system with contact points and the ignition coil listed here for engines that were factory-equipped with electronic ignition. An ignition coil intended for a conventional ignition system cannot be used on an engine with electronic ignition, and vice versa. An exception applies to engines that have subsequently been converted to electronic ignition or fitted with a 123 ignition system. These engines continue to use an ignition coil intended for a conventional ignition system.
Note regarding oil-filled ignition coils:
As the name suggests, an oil-filled ignition coil is filled with a special insulating and cooling oil. This oil ensures that the internal windings of the ignition coil remain properly cooled and electrically insulated. The mounting position is therefore very important.
When an oil-filled ignition coil is mounted upright, the oil remains in the correct position inside the housing. This allows the heat generated during operation to be dissipated effectively, while the electrical components remain fully submerged in the oil. This ensures a stable spark, extends the service life and prevents internal damage.
If the ignition coil is mounted horizontally or at an angle, however, the oil may shift. Parts of the internal windings may then no longer be covered by the oil, resulting in insufficient cooling. This can lead to overheating, loss of performance, misfires and, in the worst case, a defective ignition coil. Incorrect installation may also cause oil leakage.
For this reason, all manufacturers recommend mounting oil-filled ignition coils vertically, even if this differs from the original mounting position. This ensures reliable operation and the longest possible service life.
