You might think there's nothing to say about a standard M8 bolt. They are available everywhere, but this 25 mm long M8 bolt has quite a history behind it.

This bolt started its life as a galvanized M8 variant with a tensile strength of 8.8 under VW number N 10 242 5 which was used on all air-cooled Volkswagens except for one application on VW Beetles 1302 and 1303 and not used at all on VW Vanagons.

During the production of the VW 1302 and 1303, the tensile strength proved to be insufficient for the steering lock bolt and it was modified to 10.9, adding a version 10.9 under the number N 010 242 13 while version 8.8 was maintained for other applications. With the arrival of the Vanagon, Volkswagen stopped the production of the 8.8 variant and had them replaced by the 10.9 version for all Volkswagens but with a modified number: N 010 242 22, this in relation with the final finish. On the N 010 242 13 it was bare steel, then it was replaced by galvanized steel, as it was on the 8.8 version. Higher tensile strength was not a problem for this bolt in all its applications, and in some cases it was even better.

To this day, the M8 x 25 bolt is still in the Volkswagen lineup, but now in an environmentally friendly version. Instead of a galvanized treatment, they now have a patented, water-based, non-electrolytic zinc flake coating under the name "Geomet". In the process, the VW number was last changed to N 010 242 30.

This bolt therefore replaces a total of four different VW numbers. Our M8 x 25 bolt has a tensile strength of 10.9 to be applicable to any classic Volkswagen model in our range, and galvanized as applied by Volkswagen in the third revision. The appearance is similar to that of the factory delivery for most Volkswagens.
