Product description
On a Volkswagen with IRS rear suspension (Independent Rear Suspension), the rear suspension uses torsion bars instead of coil springs. The torsion bar is splined into the torsion tube at the inner end and into the spring plate at the outer end. As the suspension moves up and down, the bar twists and acts as a spring.
With IRS rear suspension, the spring plate is connected to the trailing arm, allowing each rear wheel to move independently of the other. The driveshaft is fitted with a CV joint at both ends, allowing it to follow the movement of the wheel as the suspension moves up and down.
The left- and right-hand torsion bars are not interchangeable. They are preloaded in the direction of load and are therefore made separately for the left and right sides. They are marked L or R and must not be swapped from one side to the other. A used torsion bar must therefore always be refitted on the same side.
The 22 mm torsion bars listed here are the same for all IRS model years of the Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Type 3 Notchback and Fastback. The Type 3 Squareback is an exception: it uses torsion bars of the same 676 mm length, but with a larger diameter of 23.5 mm.
