These rubbers are hidden behind the torsion bar covers. When you remove the spring plate, there is another rubber behind it. Therefore, we refer to an inner and an outer rubber.
For the Beetle up to model year 1959 and for the VW Bus, regardless of year of manufacture, this is not the case. For these models, the inner and outer rubbers are identical.
If the car makes creaking noises at the rear when compressing, these rubbers are usually worn out. The spring plate has sunk through the rubber and touches the cover. If you continue driving like this for too long, not only the rubbers but also the torsion bar covers will need to be replaced. Therefore, check and replace the rubbers immediately if the rear axle is creaking.
If only the outer rubber is worn, it is still advisable to replace the inner rubber as well. Otherwise, the new rubber will wear unevenly and more quickly.
Some rubbers look identical but differ in rubber compound. This can be identified by the small round raised markings on the top of the rubber. One version has two raised marks, the other only one. Keep the packaging with the rubber if necessary, so you install the correct rubber in the correct position.
A-quality rubbers have the correct hardness and are of very high quality, comparable to the original. B-quality rubbers are slightly softer, providing more comfort but at the expense of handling. They will also compress more quickly, resulting in a shorter lifespan.
