Product description
With standard suspension, rear suspension height can only be adjusted by turning the spring plates one or more teeth on the torsion bars. This operation is not only time-consuming and tedious, but also frustrating if the adjustment subsequently proves unsatisfactory - you have to start the whole process all over again. What's more, you have to make do with the fixed gearing, which means that minor height adjustment simply isn't possible.
With these continuously adjustable spring plates, you have total freedom and can adjust the height easily and precisely, without disassembly.
When using these adjustable spring plates, it is necessary to replace the original torsion bar rubbers with urethane rubbers. In addition, for models using closed torsion bar covers, the use of spacers between the torsion bar cover and the torsion shaft housing is strongly recommended (see 'Options' tab).
The inner urethane rubber is a different size, and we recommend immediate replacement of the outer rubber, which may also differ in size from the original.
The spacers are designed to accommodate the extra thickness of the double spring plate assembly. We also recommend replacing the torsion bar covers, as they also differ from the original specification in some cases.
Some IRS conversion kits use torsion bars from a pendulum axle model. In this case, the axle no longer protrudes beyond the torsion bar cover, but is locked in place like a pendulum axle. This solution is particularly popular with buggies, thanks to the tighter appearance without protruding axles.
Important note (for IRS version only):
On the IRS version, the central mounting hole does not match that of the original wishbones. Therefore, place the old spring plate on the adjustable version, mark the missing hole and drill or mill an additional mounting slot in the new spring plate.
These adjustable spring plates are widely used in off-road racing, where reinforced wishbones are often used. In this case, the center hole is usually correctly positioned.
For models prior to July 1959 (Beetle and Karmann Ghia):
When fitting to a Volkswagen Beetle or Karmann Ghia prior to July 1959, it is necessary to remove the lugs from the inner urethane rubbers for a correct fit.
