Product description
The distributor cap transfers the ignition spark via the rotor to the spark plug leads. If the contacts are heavily burned or the cap is cracked, the engine may run poorly or even stop completely.
Check the distributor cap every 5000 km for wear and damage. It is best to replace the distributor cap together with the rotor, as both parts wear into each other and function best when replaced as a set.
Volkswagen used various types of distributors and distributor caps over the years. The application lists the engines and production years on which they were originally fitted. If the distributor has previously been replaced with a different type, this information may no longer correspond with the parts actually fitted to the vehicle. Therefore, always compare the image with the installed distributor cap.
Bosch distributors
Bosch was an important Volkswagen supplier from the very beginning. Most Volkswagens are therefore equipped with a Bosch distributor. It can be identified by the Bosch logo and Bosch part number marked on the distributor.
Garbe-Lahmeyer distributors
In the early 1960s, Bosch was unable to produce enough distributors due to the high sales figures. Volkswagen therefore temporarily used distributors manufactured by Garbe-Lahmeyer. These distributors can be identified by the VW logo and VW part number. There is no Garbe-Lahmeyer logo or separate manufacturer’s part number. Although these distributors met Volkswagen specifications, they used their own distributor cap, rotor and contact points.
009 and 050 distributors
The Bosch 009 and 050 distributors use centrifugal advance only and are mainly used for tuning purposes. Their names are derived from the final digits of the Bosch part number. Both types were originally also used on Porsche engines.
123 distributors
The 123 distributor is an electronic ignition system that replaces the original mechanical system and is virtually maintenance-free. As it is not always possible to determine which distributor cap is fitted from the distributor itself, always compare the image with the installed cap.
