Product description
The distributor cap transfers the ignition spark to the spark plug wire. If the contacts are heavily burned, the engine may run poorly or even stop.
Check the distributor cap every 5000 km for wear and cracks and replace it together with the rotor if necessary. These parts wear into each other and perform best when replaced as a set.
Volkswagen has used various types of distributors and caps over the years, which explains the wide range of versions. The applications list the engines and model years in which they were originally fitted. Note that this may no longer apply if the distributor has been replaced with a different type or production year. Also, multiple distributors were often used within the same years, resulting in overlapping applications. Always compare the image with the installed part to avoid incorrect orders.
Bosch distributors (original)
Bosch has been Volkswagen’s main supplier from the beginning and most models are equipped with a Bosch distributor. These can be identified by the Bosch logo and part number.
There are also reproductions on the market without Bosch or VW logos, but with their own branding or part numbers. These use the listed distributor cap or an equivalent alternative as shown in the alternatives tab.
Garbe-Lahmeyer distributors (original)
In the early 1960s, Bosch could not meet demand and Volkswagen received support from Garbe-Lahmeyer. As a result, two brands were used during that period.
Garbe-Lahmeyer used only VW part numbers and a large VW logo without its own branding. These distributors met VW and Bosch specifications, but used their own caps, rotors and contact points.
009 and 050 distributors
The Bosch 009 and 050 were developed for tuning and are named after their Bosch part numbers. Both are fully centrifugal and were originally used on Porsche engines.
Original versions have the Bosch logo and part number, reproductions usually do not. The 050 is not reproduced, only the 009.
123 distributors
The 123 distributor is an electronic ignition system developed as a replacement for the original mechanical Volkswagen system and is virtually maintenance-free.
As no production numbers are available, application cannot be determined directly. Always compare the distributor cap with the installed part.
Note
With this type of Beru distributor cap, the carbon brush can sometimes come loose. This can be prevented by slightly stretching the spring of the carbon brush using, for example, a pen. This ensures the brush fits more tightly in the cap and remains securely in place.
