The cooling of the air-cooled engine must not be impeded in any way. Despite the fact that the engine compartment is sealed in most cases, it still regularly happens that a piece of loose engine insulation is sucked against the cooling housing, resulting in major engine damage. Over the years, we've pulled all sorts of things out of the cooling fan, with a lost cleaning cloth being the number one spot. To prevent this from ever happening, Type 1 engines equipped with a cooling housing without an external oil cooler box (i.e. single inlet engines) can be equipped with an additional fan net which is mounted to the rear of the cooling housing with a clamp. This fan net is especially with Baja's and Buggy (where the engine compartment is not enclosed) a must, the chance of unwanted parts being sucked into the cooling box while driving is greater than you think. When developing the Type 4 engine, Volkswagen included a fan net as standard to protect the engine and the mechanic's fingers. In many type 4 engines, this net has been deformed or removed over the years. Our advice : make sure it is well protected and install a new fan net. The fan net for the type 1 engine is completely chrome plated, so that when the rear side of the engine is visible, it contributes to a nicely finished engine. For the type 4 engines it is similar to the original, made of black plastic.
