If the coolant pressure in the expansion tank becomes too high, the excess pressure is released through the expansion tank cap. This cap plays an important role in the cooling system and ensures that the pressure remains within safe limits. If the cap is releasing pressure, this is therefore not normal behaviour. In that case, check for possible engine-related problems, such as overheating or combustion gases entering the cooling system.
On older vehicles, the plastic of the cap can harden over time, causing the cap to crack. Therefore, do not overtighten the cap, hand-tight is sufficient. The expansion tank cap is fitted with an internal seal and a pressure valve.
