When restoring an early Beetle, the front apron is often one of the body panels that needs to be replaced due to rust, previous accident damage or earlier repairs. The lower section at the front in particular has had a lot to endure over the years.
This front apron replaces the complete lower section at the front of the body. The characteristic pressings and reinforcements are made according to the original design, so the panel also makes an important contribution to the original appearance of the car during a thorough restoration.
When replacing it, the old front apron is removed by releasing the original welded joints, after which the new panel is fitted and welded in place. Always fully trial-fit the panel before carrying out the final welding. Pay particular attention to the fit with the front wings, bonnet, bumper brackets and surrounding bodywork. Over the years, a Beetle may have deviated slightly from its original dimensions due to damage or previous repairs.
This front apron is available from both SWT and Autocraft. Both versions have a comparable fit and quality level. The SWT version is supplied with the retaining strip for the bonnet seal already fitted. With the Autocraft version, this retaining strip is not included and must be ordered separately. The choice between the two brands is therefore mainly a matter of personal preference and the desired level of completeness.
