Product description
On a Volkswagen with a swing axle, the rear suspension uses torsion bars instead of coil springs. The torsion bar is splined into the torsion tube on the inner side and into the spring plate on the outer side. As the rear wheel moves up and down, the torsion bar twists and acts as a spring.
The left and right torsion bars are not interchangeable. From August 1959 onwards, they were preloaded during production in their normal direction of load and were therefore made specifically for the left or right side. They are marked L or R and must not be swapped from one side to the other. This is because the torsion bars are loaded in opposite directions on the left and right sides. A used torsion bar should therefore always be refitted on the same side.
The so-called compensating spring also plays an important role in this rear suspension. Volkswagen fitted this additional transverse spring to most later swing axle models. It is connected to both sides of the rear axle by rods and helps limit changes in wheel camber as the suspension moves, improving handling.
The compensating spring should not be confused with a conventional anti-roll bar. Volkswagen also supplied versions without a compensating spring; on these, the torsion bars may differ in diameter and spring rate from versions fitted with a compensating spring.
