Weber is one of the biggest carburetor suppliers of the past and still produces carburetors applicable to our air- and water-cooled engines to achieve higher engine power. The Weber IDF is the best-known carburetor in the range and has proved its worth over the years, whether as a factory-fitted carburetor on different makes of car or in all forms of motorsport.
In recent years, however, Weber has added a serious competitor: the EMPI HPMX. What started out as an identical reproduction of the Weber IDF has become a carburetor that surpasses even the original Weber in terms of power increase. While Weber development has remained relatively stagnant, EMPI has continually perfected its HPMX. This has paid off: independent tests have repeatedly shown that the HPMX outperforms the Weber. What started out as a copy has become a serious competitor in its own right.
Moreover, the principle that "the bigger the carburetor, the greater the power" applies only in part: the rest of the engine must also be tuned to take account of this increase. So it's important to think carefully about which carburetor is right for your engine. Carburetors are delivered ready for assembly, with a standard nozzle. After assembly, it is essential - especially for twin carburetors - to synchronize the two units precisely. A synchrometer is essential for this.
After this initial adjustment, it is strongly recommended to have the engine tuned on a power bench. There are specialized companies in the Netherlands that achieve optimum results in this area. On the dyno, depending on the measurements, the correct nozzle arrangement is chosen and the ignition is adjusted (pre- or post-ignition) to obtain maximum engine power. Don't forget that larger carburetors often require a fast-flow distributor.
In short, the choice is yours: opt for the classic Weber IDF fitted to the IDF 40 without choke and the IDF 44 with choke, or opt for the advanced EMPI HPMX fitted to the 40 and 44 with choke.
