Product description
On Beetles through December 1953 and Buses through July 1966, the brake fluid reservoir is bolted directly to the master cylinder. This same principle is frequently used in baby carriages and related homebrew projects that use a single-acting brake system. The only advantage of a single-acting brake system over the much safer dual-acting brake system is in the placement of the brake fluid reservoir. Because of its placement directly on the master cylinder, there is no chance of a supply line spontaneously coming loose during rougher cross and racing work. You can of course mount an original plastic reservoir or opt for a B-quality variant, but is this wise? For normal use no problem, but for rougher work this full aluminum reservoir is a lot more reliable. Leaking between the jar and the mounting bolt is not possible here. Also, the cap no longer cracks. It is the most solid brake fluid reservoir you can buy and it is also a great looking reservoir. The latter is reason enough to abandon the original plastic one. Comes ready to install with a rubber seal and vent in the cap.
Please note : the VW models listed with the years of manufacture indicate when Volkswagen fitted these screw-on jars. If there is a thread for the container, you can use this aluminum one.
Plastic reservoir
If you still decide to go for the original, or a cheaper alternative to it, have a look at the following plastic reservoirs:
#3256 : A-quality plastic reservoir
#1253: B-quality plastic reservoir
#21205 : Master cylinder
For both the aluminum and plastic reservoirs, you will need a single-acting master cylinder that is threaded. This has a diameter of 22.2 mm and was originally used only on the Bus, but can also replace the original for the Beetle until December 1953. Can be applied without problems to baby carriages and other creations and due to its large diameter very suitable when mounting disc brakes front and/or rear.
