When building a higher-performance Type 1 or Type 3 engine, it is not only the displacement or camshaft selection that matters, there is much more involved. Among other things, the cam followers must match the camshaft, not only in terms of material but also in diameter. The more aggressive the camshaft profile, the larger the contact surface of the cam follower needs to be.
With a mild camshaft, a 28 mm cam follower is generally sufficient, this is the standard size. However, with a more aggressive camshaft, this contact area may be too small and a larger version should be used.
We strive to save as much weight as possible. Anything that is not there does not have to be moved, resulting in more power and more efficient engine operation.
All cam followers are manufactured from a single piece of chrome-molybdenum steel, providing additional strength and durability. Paruzzi cam followers are equipped as standard with an extra oil passage that allows pressurized lubrication between the cam follower and cam lobe. Especially at higher engine speeds, this is far from an unnecessary luxury.
When using these cam followers, it is necessary to install a higher-capacity oil pump. However, this is an obvious choice when you are seriously involved in engine tuning.
For Type 4 engines, you can choose between mechanical and hydraulic self-adjusting cam followers. For serious performance tuning, mechanical cam followers are generally preferred, allowing valve clearance to be adjusted accurately by hand.
During an engine rebuild, it is virtually essential to apply assembly paste to all moving components. This prevents premature wear during the break-in period. Engine oil is not suitable for this purpose because it is too thin and does not remain in place during assembly. Assembly paste, on the other hand, adheres well and provides protection during the engine's first operating hours.
This is especially important for cam followers to prevent excessive wear during the first few minutes after startup. Be sure to order assembly paste as well, see the Options tab.
Special cam follower clips are available to hold the cam followers of a Type 1 or Type 3 engine in place during assembly. If you have never done this before, you may be tempted to try without them, but trust me, this small investment provides a huge amount of convenience. Just try holding four cam followers in place at the same time.
