Cooling air leaks must be avoided wherever possible, which is why Volkswagen has gone to great lengths to ensure that cooling air cannot escape anywhere.
The throttle cable enters the engine compartment through the rear panel and is guided through the fan shroud to the carburetor by a metal tube.at the front of this fan shroud, the tube passes through rubber into a tightly-fitting hole, and at the rear of the engine is a hole, which is precisely where the air enters the carburetor, this is where the cooling air can escape, a problem solved with a rubber seal.
The grommet at the front and the sealing rubber at the rear are no longer present on many engines.
It's exactly these details that need attention when building the engine, and these rubbers absolutely must not be missing. The grommet mentioned here has a second function which is only used on the Volkswagen Split Bus. In addition to its intended function of routing the gas pedal cable through the panel above the gearbox, it is also used as a grommet for the speedometer cable. If you need to replace the speedometer cable, it's advisable to order this rubber immediately, as in most cases the rubber has deteriorated over the years.
