If the fuel filter becomes extremely contaminated, the fuel supply can be restricted to such an extent that the engine receives too little fuel. You can keep fitting a new filter, but it is often more sensible to replace the fuel tank.
Rust flakes inside the tank are usually the cause of the blockage. Cleaning the tank may help temporarily, but it generally does not provide a lasting solution. The metal has already been affected, allowing new rust particles to come loose within a short time and block the fuel filter again. When replacing the tank, it is important to consider the diameter of the filler neck, as Volkswagen changed this several times over the years. Up to and including 9.1952, a filler neck with a diameter of 100 mm was used. From 10.1952 up to 3.1953, this was changed to 60 mm, after which Volkswagen returned to a diameter of 100 mm from 4.1953 up to 7.1955.
This fuel tank has a 60 mm filler neck and therefore fits Beetles from 10.1952 up to 3.1953 directly, better known as the Zwitter models. The tank can also be used for Beetles up to 9.1952 and from 4.1953 up to 7.1955, provided the correct fuel cap is fitted. This is listed under the “Options” tab.
