The story of a tire with a white sidewall originated in the early 1900s. At that time, tires were made of 100% natural rubber, but they wore out very quickly. A small tire factory in Chicago was the first to add zinc oxide for better wear resistance, which made the tire white instead of black.
A white tire was impractical, required a lot of maintenance and soon an additional dye was added that made the tire black again. This new black tire was considered a luxury tire for wealthy car owners.
In the 1930's it was the other way around and it was Ford who first introduced a black tire with a white sidewall as an additional luxury option. This trend was quickly followed by other American car manufacturers and the "White Wall Tire" became a status symbol for the luxury automobile. The "white wall tire" was widely used until the 1970s. The rim became narrower and narrower until it disappeared completely from the streetscape.
There are several systems for creating white walls on a regular tire, but there is only one that is really good. Most whitewall inserts crumble at higher speeds, damaging the sidewall of the tire. These A-grade whitewall inserts consist of three parts: the synthetic whitewall of about 4.5 cm, a black backing to prevent damage to the tire and a stainless steel rim ring. The white wall is mounted on the stainless steel rim ring using the plastic clamps provided.
Note: These A-grade whitewall tires are guaranteed for Volkswagen models listed, provided they are equipped with original equipment rims and matching tires with a factory-fitted tire size. We cannot guarantee that they will fit the rims of any other Volkswagen model (or other make of car), in which case fitting is at your own risk.
