What many people don't know is that Volkswagen never supplied separate shock absorbers for the Beetle 1302 and 1303. The strut also served as the shock absorber housing. When the shock absorber was replaced, the entire strut was renewed, thus avoiding serious rust damage to the strut.
at the time, the aftermarket cleverly played on this point by developing shock absorbers that could be mounted in the existing strut housing. This solution was much cheaper than replacing the complete strut, which was only available from the dealer.
However, years later, we find that this approach has a major drawback. The strut was designed to last as long as the shock absorber, not the life of the car. As a result, rusty spring plates have become a common problem. This situation has given rise to a thriving trade in used struts, the price of which is rising by the day.
Until recently, we had to make do with detached shock absorbers fitted to existing struts. In fact, Volkswagen stopped producing complete struts years ago, and there were no reproductions available.
Until recently! Now they're available again! These new struts are of the highest quality, identical to those supplied by Volkswagen dealers in the 70s and 80s.
Like the original, the shock absorbers are oil-filled. Prefer gas-filled shock absorbers? That's possible! The existing shock absorber can easily be removed and replaced by a gas-filled shock absorber (see Alternatives tab).
