Under normal conditions, a steering box requires no maintenance. Changing the oil is therefore not included in the Volkswagen maintenance schedule. During an overhaul, however, the oil must of course be replaced. If you have purchased a new steering box, always check whether it has been filled with lubricant at the factory, as this is not always the case.

This classic oil is a medium EP-additivated SAE 90 gear oil suitable for classic steering boxes in which SAE 90 oil is specified. Due to the requirements modern lubricants have to meet, modern and often thinner gear oils are considerably less suitable or unsuitable for use in classic transmissions.

This classic oil has the following properties:

Excellent lubricating properties
Good anti-corrosion properties
Good EP properties
Compatible with classic seals and rubber components
Good anti-foaming properties

Note: Only use oil with the specified specification. Using a lubricant with different specifications may affect the warranty of a new or rebuilt steering box.

Steering box types:

Volkswagen used various types of steering boxes over the years. Older Beetle and Karmann Ghia models used worm-and-sector steering, which was later replaced by worm-and-roller steering. The T2 Split and the first model years of the T2 Bay are equipped with worm-and-peg steering. From August 1972, the T2 Bay was fitted with worm-and-roller steering. The later Beetle 1303 and the T25 use rack-and-pinion steering.

It is important to know which type of steering box is fitted to your vehicle. The different systems are explained below.

With worm-and-sector steering (sector type), a worm fitted to the steering column shaft operates against a toothed segment, the sector. Rotating the worm turns the output shaft of the steering box.

With worm-and-peg steering (worm-and-peg type), a peg mounted on the output shaft of the steering box runs through the groove in the worm. Rotating the worm moves the peg and thereby turns the output shaft.

With worm-and-roller steering (roller type), a bearing-mounted toothed roller engages with the worm. This system works according to the same basic principle as the earlier steering box types, but the use of a roller provides a larger contact area and reduces friction and wear.

With rack-and-pinion steering (rack-and-pinion type), a pinion, a small gear on the steering column shaft, engages directly with a straight toothed rack. Turning the steering wheel moves the rack longitudinally to the left or right.

Volkswagen did not introduce the different systems on all models at the same time. The application of each system is listed below.
