Difficulty shifting gears can be caused by a worn gearbox, but the cause is often much simpler. The coupling between the shift rod and the gearbox may also be worn.
On the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3 and Trekker, the shift rod coupling can be accessed by removing the cover plate above the chassis number underneath the rear seat. On the T2 Bay, you need to crawl underneath the vehicle to reach the coupling.
Part of the coupling is fitted with vulcanized rubber to absorb vibrations. Over time, this rubber can dry out and develop play. This can make it difficult or even impossible to select the correct gear.
This standard shift rod coupling looks almost identical to the original part but has been technically improved. On the original version, the mounting screw is screwed into a specially shaped mounting sleeve. The screw grips into the shape of this sleeve, which does not have a conventional thread. This mounting method is less strong and reliable than a bolt-and-nut connection.
On this improved version, the mounting sleeve has therefore been replaced by a through-bushing with a bolt-and-nut connection. This provides a stronger and more reliable installation while retaining an almost completely original appearance.
For a completely play-free and extra-strong installation, choose the reinforced version. This version has been fully adapted for a 100% play-free installation but differs visually from the original. You can find it under the ‘Alternatives’ tab.
