Difficulty shifting gears can be caused by a worn gearbox, but the cause may also be simpler. The coupling between the shift rod and the gearbox may be worn.
On the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia and Type 3, the shift rod coupling is easily accessible by removing the cover plate above the chassis number underneath the rear seat. On the VW Bus, you need to crawl underneath the vehicle to reach the coupling.
To absorb vibrations, part of the coupling is fitted with vulcanized rubber. Over time, this rubber can dry out and develop play, making it difficult or even impossible to select the correct gear.
The shift rod of the T2 Split consists of several sections. There is a rear coupling that connects the shift rod to the gearbox and a centre coupling that connects the two longest sections of the shift rod. This centre coupling is a solid connecting piece and does not contain any vulcanized rubber parts.
Special bolts are required for installation. These are not included and can be ordered separately. You can find them under the ‘Options’ tab.
