This oil temperature sensor can be installed in the special sensor adapter on Type 4, waterboxer and CT/CZ engines. The adapter is listed under the Related products tab.
On Type 4 engines, the sensor can also directly replace the oil drain plug, provided the engine has an M14 drain plug. Type 4 engines up to 12.1971 were factory-fitted exclusively with an M12 drain plug. Later Type 4 engines in the T2 Bay may have either an M12 or M14 drain plug. Always check the size fitted to your engine.
On Type 1 and CT/CZ engines, the sensor can also be installed in the oil filler pipe blanking plate. A hole must be drilled and tapped with an M14 thread. This mounting position is prepared on a universal Volkswagen crankcase. With an original crankcase without this opening, the crankcase itself must also be drilled and tapped.
Important: Never install the sensor directly in a standard oil strainer cover on a Type 1, Type 3 or CT/CZ engine. The sensor may touch the oil strainer and block the oil pickup. Installation in this position is only possible with an oil strainer cover that is sufficiently raised around the drain plug, leaving enough clearance between the sensor and the oil strainer.
