The Volkswagen Bus body is self-supporting, if parts of the body are removed, it may affect the structure.
On the VW Buses that are factory equipped with both left and right cargo doors or an open roof, the structure is weakened to the point that additional reinforcements are necessary. On the Volkswagens that had these options, an additional underfloor plate was installed under the existing floor, this compensates for the loss of strength from the roof or side.
These underfloor plates also have another great advantage, they protect a large portion of the underside. In VW buses that are factory fitted with underlayment, the rotting process will be a lot less dramatic than when this underlayment is not present.
Most VW Buses do not have double loading doors or an open roof and therefore do not have additional underlayment plates, but you can always consider installing them additionally, the structure can take more weight and the underside of your VW Bus will be better protected.
Originally subfloors are welded, but they can also be bolted on. This is mainly used when the subfloor plates are mounted after the restoration is completed.
Note for middle subfloor plate for Volkswagen Buses through July 1967
This subfloor plate is not manufactured in one pressing automated process, but largely by hand. This causes expansion and contraction which causes the plate to bend or twist slightly, once assembled this is no longer visible, so do not think this is shipping damage.
