The VW Bus bodywork is self-supporting, if parts of the bodywork are removed, it can affect the construction.
In the case of VW Bus models equipped with left and right loading doors or a factory sunroof, the construction is so affected that additional reinforcements are required. With Volkswagens that had these options, an additional floor plate was added under the existing floor, which compensates for the loss of strength of the roof or side.
These floor plates also have a great advantage: they protect a large part of the underside. In the case of Volkswagen Buses equipped with a subfloor at the factory, the decay process will be much less dramatic than if this underfloor is not present.
Most VW Bus models do not have double loading doors or an open roof and therefore no additional floor plates, but you can always consider installing these additional floors. The construction can support more weight and the underside of your Bus is better protected.
Originally, underfloors are welded, but they can also be bolted. This applies mainly when the floor plates are mounted after the restoration is completed.
Note regarding the center floor for Volkswagen Bus up to 7.1967
This plate is not automatically produced in a press, but mostly by hand. This causes expansion and contraction, which makes the plate bend or twist slightly. Once installed, this phenomenon will no longer be visible, so do not assume that this is damage caused by transport.
