Product description
The Weber DFEV 32/36 and EMPI EPC 32/36F are progressive carburettors that combine the advantages of a relatively small carburettor during normal driving with increased airflow when more power is required. During normal driving and part throttle, mainly the first 32 mm stage is used. As the accelerator is opened further, the second 36 mm stage progressively opens as well. This provides considerably greater air/fuel flow under higher engine loads.
This carburettor kit is intended for Type 1 dual-port engines, reusing the existing intake manifold end castings. The supplied centre manifold is designed for the larger 1600cc end castings. If you have a 1300cc engine with the smaller original end castings, these must be replaced with 1600cc versions; these can be found under the Options tab.
The supplied intake manifold must fit between both end castings without tension. The manifold is made slightly long and it may therefore be necessary to shorten the tubes slightly. If the centre manifold is clamped tightly between the end castings, the end castings may not seal correctly against the cylinder heads, which can result in air leaks.
Attention: During installation, also check the clearance between the electric choke and the fan shroud. Make sure that the choke, and especially its electrical connection, cannot touch the fan shroud and cause a short circuit. If the clearance is very small, insulating tape can be applied to the fan shroud as additional protection.
Also install the supplied support bracket as described. It stabilises the centre manifold and helps reduce vibration. Make sure the carburettor also has a good earth connection so that, among other things, the electric choke can operate correctly.
For this carburettor kit, the use of a 009 distributor or a suitable 123 ignition is recommended. With a correctly matched ignition advance curve, you can get the maximum performance from the carburettor.
As with any carburettor, and particularly one that was never fitted as standard to the engine concerned, correct jetting and adjustment are very important. The standard jetting should be regarded as a starting point; engine size, engine modifications and operating conditions may require different jetting. For the best result, we recommend having the engine tuned on a rolling road.
The kits are available with an original Weber DFEV 32/36 or an EMPI EPC 32/36F carburettor. Weber has proven its quality and reliability over many years. The EMPI EPC 32/36F operates according to the same progressive 32/36 principle and offers a more attractively priced alternative. The other progressive carburettor can be found under the Alternatives tab.
Note: The supplied intake manifold is equipped with preheating tubes, but the exhaust gas passage in the centre section is not completely drilled through from the factory. As a result, there is no full exhaust gas flow through the preheating passage and the centre manifold is heated less effectively. If you want the preheating system to operate fully, this passage must be drilled through.
A properly functioning preheating system is especially important in cold and damp weather. Because of the long intake path and fuel evaporation, the intake manifold can become very cold, causing poorer fuel vaporisation and even carburettor icing. This can result in hesitation, poor throttle response and an uneven-running engine. Even in warmer climates, proper preheating remains beneficial for mixture formation.
The centre intake manifold is also available separately under the Replacement parts tab. On this version, the preheating passage is fully drilled through. However, this manifold is only suitable for vehicles equipped with a DC generator.
