Product description
The original Type 1 engine of our air-cooled VW with a single carburetor is a deliberately simple engine construction. The engine had to be cheap to produce, reliable and easy to maintain. An important limiting factor of the Type 1 engine in terms of power and torque is the construction with a single carburetor. Ideal for reducing costs and maintaining engine reliability (less maintenance and easier tuning), but at the same time this construction ensures that the engine efficiency is at its lowest. With the latest type 3 and type 4 engines, this concept has been modified and they have worked on efficiency, these were equipped with two carburetors, i.e. one carburetor for two cylinders.
There are many alternatives on the market, ranging from single carburettrs mounted on the side to a two-stage carburetor placed in the middle, but by far the most popular and efficient carburetors are the double carburetors mounted on the side. This is because you have four carburetors, one for each cylinder. The advantage of two dual carburetors over a single carburetor is that all cylinders receive an equal amount of mixture at the same time. In addition, the direction of flow of the mixture is only slightly changed, which is of considerable benefit when filling the cylinders. These carburettrs are therefore particularly suitable for tuned engines. A disadvantage is that these carburetors require more adjustment work. The best known dual carburetors are the Weber IDF and the Dellorto DRLA.
In recent years a new player has appeared on the market with the so-called "HPMX" and "D" carburetors. They are marketed by EMPI and are sold as a complete set, including manifolds, air filters, rod system and mounting hardware.
The Dellorto 36 mm was a very popular carburetor in the 60's and 70's because of its diameter and reliability. After Dellorto production was discontinued, the second-hand market came into operation, but it finally dried up as well. EMPI already had a lot of experience with Weber reproductions and decided to also reproduce the Dellorto 36 mm, with the difference that the Dellorto was never up to date while EMPI was continuously developing the D carburettor. This gives you a carburetor that has surpassed the original and the Dellorto 36 mm in its new configuration, since EMPI D is back.
The 36 mm D is very suitable for engines up to 1800 cc and therefore very popular with "everyday drivers" who want more power reliably.
Note: It is necessary that the fanshroud is modified to avoid hitting the carburetors, a better option is to order directly a fanshroud from our range, these are designed for that.
The 36 mm EMPI D carburetors set consists of the following parts :
- two 36 mm EMPI D twin carburetors
- air filters
- intake manifold
- fuel hose
- gaskets and mounting material
- mounting instructions
- ignition coil modification position support
- set of gas rods
