Product description
The alternator must be cooled. On Type 1 engines, this is done using the cooling air fan in the cooling box (fan shroud), which draws air from the engine compartment through the dynamo or alternator.
It's important that this air flow isn't interrupted, as this would cause the alternator to overheat, particularly under prolonged use or heavy loads.
The most powerful alternators in use operate on the alternating current principle. To increase airflow power, Volkswagen has equipped the pulley with an additional impeller on the latest Type 1 engines. With the increase in electronics, and therefore the load on the alternator, only the fan in the fan shroud was insufficient.
The standard alternator is rated at 50 or 55 amps, so if your Volkswagen is still completely original, your original pulley will suffice. If your alternator is more heavily loaded with additional accessories such as a heavy audio system, extra lighting, etc., the cooling will have to be modified by replacing your existing pulley with the one mentioned here.
If you're fitting a higher-power alternator, it goes without saying that you'll also need to adapt the pulley accordingly, as you've chosen a higher-power alternator for a reason - you'll be loading it more heavily.
There are adjusting rings between the pulley halves; by removing or adding adjusting rings, the V-belt can be tensioned. If you can press the V-belt about 1.5 cm with your thumb, it is correctly tensioned.
Examine the options and order a set of adjustment rings and a new key if necessary. The key is located in the dynamo shaft and secures the pulley to the shaft.
