An alternator (AC) is better than a direct current generator (DC). Not only does it last longer, but it also charges the battery faster, which is not a luxury with today's electrical accessories. On some VW models, this alternator is factory installed, but unfortunately this was never the case for the VW Type 3.
With this conversion kit, you replace the existing 12-volt DC dynamo/generator with a fast charging alternator, which means you can get rid of your existing voltage regulator, because it's now integrated with your new alternator. Adjusting the V-belt is also now much more pleasant by adjusting the alternator instead of having to fiddle with adjusting rings between the pulley halves.
In short, one more reason to switch from DC to AC with this conversion kit.
Note: This kit is initially not suitable for converting from 6 to 12 volts. If this is your intention, you will also need to find the engine shroud from a 12 volt Type 3 Volkswagen to go with it.
