Volkswagen originally chose helical-cut camshaft and crankshaft gears. The main advantage of this design is quiet operation. One disadvantage is that the helical teeth generate axial thrust on the camshaft during operation. With a standard engine, this normally does not cause a problem.
When using a high-performance camshaft and especially heavy-duty or dual valve springs, the load on the camshaft drive increases. A straight-cut gear set is then the better choice. Straight-cut gears generate virtually no axial gear thrust on the camshaft, greatly reducing the load on the cam bearing thrust surface. Straight-cut gears also create less friction than helical-cut gears, resulting in lower power loss in the drive.
Keep in mind that straight-cut gears produce more mechanical noise than the original helical-cut gears. Their characteristic whining sound is especially noticeable with a quiet exhaust system.
This gear set is manufactured from 8620 steel and consists of a straight-cut camshaft gear and crankshaft gear. The set is supplied with Grade 8 mounting bolts and 0°, 2° and 4° adjusting discs.
These adjusting discs allow the camshaft timing to be set accurately and advanced or retarded as required. Use the 0° adjusting discs when no correction is required. This allows you not only to correct any deviation in camshaft timing, but also to deliberately adjust the timing to suit the desired engine characteristics.

When fitting a high-performance camshaft and/or heavy-duty or dual valve springs, we always recommend installing a straight-cut gear set.
