Over time, seats sag, causing the upholstery to tear and reducing seating comfort. These tears occur because a gap develops between the upholstery and the padding.
Always check the condition of the padding before reupholstering. Installing new upholstery over old, sagging padding may look acceptable at first, but after a few months the upholstery will loosen and the padding will still need to be replaced.
From model year 1977 onwards, the seat base of the VW Beetle was made of foam, while the backrest was still made of so-called horsehair (coconut fibre). Many restorers also choose foam for the backrest. The choice is simple: foam is warmer, more comfortable and shapes more easily, allowing the upholstery to be fitted more tightly.
Make a well-considered choice between the original coconut fibre (horsehair) padding or foam padding for added comfort.
