Product description
From August 1970, the 1300cc and 1600cc Type 1 engines were fitted with dual-port intake ports and therefore also used a different intake manifold from earlier years. The manifold consists of three parts: a centre section on which the carburettor is mounted and two end castings attached to the cylinder heads.
Originally, the 1300cc version has a smaller internal diameter than the 1600cc version. As a result, original 1300cc end castings do not fit a 1600cc intake manifold. The end castings listed here have the dimensions of the 1600cc version and can be used on both 1300cc and 1600cc engines.
If you have purchased a high-flow intake manifold and want to install it on a 1300cc engine, these 1600cc end castings must also be used.
With some carburettor kits and separate intake manifolds for a centrally mounted Weber or EMPI carburettor, the end castings are not included. It is assumed that the existing end castings will be reused. If you do not have 1600cc end castings, they will have to be purchased separately.
The end castings are supplied as a set, including gaskets, intake boots and clamps. These parts are also available separately under the Replacement parts tab. In addition to this standard version, a fully chrome-plated set is available under Alternatives for those who want the engine compartment to stand out even more.
The standard set listed here is not provided with vacuum connections, which may be required on automatic models or VW buses with a brake booster. The left-hand end casting does, however, have a reinforced boss in which a vacuum connection (hose barb) can be installed. A hole must be drilled and a thread tapped for this. The chrome-plated set is already prepared for this with a blanking plug, which can be replaced by a hose barb if required.
Attention: The centre manifold must slide into both end castings without tension. The intake boots, together with the clamps, provide an airtight connection. The centre manifold must therefore not fit tightly in the end castings. If necessary, sand the inside of the end castings evenly until the centre section can be inserted without binding.
First assemble the complete intake manifold loosely and align all parts correctly before finally tightening the end castings, intake boots and clamps. Depending on the centre manifold being used, it may also be necessary to shorten the centre section slightly so that the complete manifold can be installed without tension.
