Product description
From August 1970, the 1300cc and 1600cc Type 1 engines were fitted with dual-port intake ports and therefore also used a different intake manifold from earlier years. The manifold consists of three parts: a centre section on which the carburettor is mounted and two end castings attached to the cylinder heads.
On the original 1300cc version, the connection to the centre manifold is smaller than on the 1600cc version. Original 1300cc end castings therefore cannot simply be combined with a 1600cc centre section. The end castings listed here have the dimensions of the 1600cc version and can be used on both 1300cc and 1600cc engines.
If you have purchased a high-flow intake manifold and want to install it on a 1300cc engine, these 1600cc end castings must also be used.
With various carburettor kits and separate intake manifolds for a centrally mounted Weber or EMPI carburettor, the end castings are not included. It is assumed that the existing end castings will be reused. If you do not have the correct 1600cc end castings, they will have to be purchased separately.
The end castings are supplied as a complete set, including gaskets, intake boots and clamps. These parts are also available separately under the Replacement parts tab. You can choose between a standard version, listed under Alternatives, or the fully chrome-plated version listed here for those who also want to give the appearance of the engine extra attention.
On this chrome-plated set, the left-hand end casting is provided with a vacuum connection. This is supplied closed with a blanking plug. If required, a hose barb can be fitted here for applications where a vacuum connection is necessary, such as certain automatic models or a VW Bus with a brake booster.
Attention: The centre manifold must slide into both end castings without tension. The intake boots, together with the clamps, then provide an airtight connection. On this chrome-plated version, the chrome layer on the inside of the connection may cause the centre manifold to fit too tightly. In that case, sand the inside evenly until the centre section can be slid into the end castings without binding.
First assemble the complete intake manifold loosely and align all parts carefully before finally tightening the end castings, intake boots and clamps. Depending on the centre manifold being used, it may also be necessary to shorten the centre section slightly so that the complete assembly can be installed without tension.
