Product description
The hydraulic pressure generated through the brake pedal is transferred through the brake line and brake hose to the wheel brake cylinder. The pistons in the wheel brake cylinder are then pushed outward and press the brake shoes against the brake drum, slowing the vehicle down.
To bleed the brake system, the wheel brake cylinder is fitted with a bleed nipple. This is protected against dirt and corrosion by a protective cap.
How can you recognise a defective wheel brake cylinder?
A defective wheel brake cylinder can usually be recognised by leaking brake fluid or by one or both pistons being seized in the housing due to corrosion. If you catch it in time, often only the dust boot is filled with brake fluid. If the leakage has progressed further and the inside of the brake drum has become greasy, we recommend replacing the brake lining as well. Brake lining absorbs brake fluid like a sponge and this will permanently reduce braking performance.
The bleed nipple itself can also be a reason to replace the wheel brake cylinder. These nipples are relatively fragile and can break off during removal or bleeding. In that case, replacing the complete wheel brake cylinder is often the only solution.
A- or B-quality
Some wheel brake cylinders are available in two quality levels. If an alternative quality is available for this wheel brake cylinder, you will find it under the Alternatives tab.
If you choose A-quality, you are choosing a high-quality wheel brake cylinder that is equivalent to the original in quality. The more affordable B-quality is inferior in quality on several points, which means its service life will generally be shorter. Once the wheel brake cylinder has been fitted and is working, no warranty claim can be made.
Note: Wheel brake cylinders must never be assembled dry. All internal components must be lubricated with a thin layer of brake cylinder paste before installation. You might expect new brake parts to always be lubricated at the factory, but this is not always the case. Therefore, always check this before installation. The correct assembly paste can be found under the Options tab.
