Monissa tapauksissa liitäntäsauvoja ei voida laittaa takaisin paikoilleen välittömästi, vaan ne on kunnostettava kokonaan. On hyvin tiedossa, että monet ihmiset asentavat liitäntäsauvat uudelleen mittaamatta tai työstämättä niitä ja huomaavat vasta myöhemmin, että moottorin käyttöikä on suuri pettymys.
Liitäntäsauvojen peruskorjaus voidaan tehdä vain oikeilla työkaluilla, joita useimmilla korjaamoilla ei ole. Tämä työ annetaan usein erikoistuneen kunnostusyrityksen tehtäväksi. Ennen kuin ryhdyt tähän toimenpiteeseen, on suositeltavaa kysyä kustannuksista, jotka voivat olla niin korkeat, että uusi liitäntäsauvasarja on edullisempi.
On selvää, että myös nämä uudet vakiotulpat on mitattava, katsottava, onko niiden välinen painoero toleranssien rajoissa, ja katsottava, sopiiko männäntappi pienellä peukalon painalluksella.
