Coolant leaks are often caused by porous hoses, but on older Volkswagens, metal hoses wear out too. Rust is the main culprit, a phenomenon frequently encountered on water-cooled boxer engines.
In particular, the hose connecting the water pump to the thermostat housing (applied from August 1985) is highly susceptible to corrosion. Not surprisingly, it needs replacing. The hose mounted on the water pump and connected to the cylinder head by an intermediate hose is also often defective.
The hose between the water pump and the thermostat housing is, like the original, made of steel. The other hoses - from the water pump to the crankcase, from the crankcase to the water pump and from the oil cooler to the thermostat - are made of stainless steel. This ensures that rust and wear are eliminated once and for all.
The stainless steel hose on the crankcase next to the cylinder head replaces the plastic version with which most water-boxer engines are delivered from the factory, a part which sooner or later causes leaks.
When replacing a hose, it is often necessary to replace some of the hoses as well. Even if this isn't strictly necessary yet, it's a good idea to do it as a preventive measure; after years of use, they're usually at the end of their life. Don't forget to order new hose clamps, as old ones lose their effectiveness over time.
