The water pump is one of the most important elements for cooling the engine. A faulty water pump is not uncommon, all water-cooled engines at a certain age will have a water pump problem.
In the early years, water pumps were extensively overhauled and at the dealer you could choose between a new or overhauled water pump that was offered in exchange. This has now been behind us for years, due to the high production of water pumps, the price has fallen and the overhaul is therefore no longer interesting.
Now that a large part of the coolant has been lost anyway, it is advisable to drain the whole system and you will see that this will not be an unnecessary luxury, with most cars the coolant looks more like sludge water. Changing the coolant is not a priority during routine service, but it should be done regularly.
