Product description
T3 diesel engines are the only ones in our model range where the camshaft and diesel pump are driven by a timing belt. Volkswagen does not specify when it should be replaced, but the general rule is every 50,000 miles.
If you're not sure when the timing belt was replaced, we recommend doing it now. Only then can you be sure you're not running with a worn timing belt (which can cause considerable engine damage if it breaks).
It is wise to replace the tensioner at the same time, as you can be sure that the tensioner will not last another 50,000 miles. If your belt is not yet ready to be replaced, but the tensioner bearing is making noise, you can replace the tensioner separately.
It is very important that you have the right tools to ensure, among other things, that the camshaft and injection pump are exactly on time and not slipping during the tensioning process. If you do not have all the necessary tools, order them directly, see the 'Options' tab.
